Effects of climate change on Lake District examined
A conference was held at the Castle Green Hotel, Kendal, to discuss the likely effects that climate change is to have on the Lake District.
The meeting was based on the new reportLow-carbon Lake District', which also suggests opportunities to tackle these issues, compiled by Kendal-based environmentalist, Rebecca Willis.
Over 100 delegates met yesterday to discuss the report and the steps that need to be taken to make the Lake District a low-carbon district.
Guest speakers included Ms Willis, Richard Leafe, chief executive of the Lake District National Park Authority, Jonathon Porritt, chair of the Sustainable Development Commission and Bryan Gray, chair of the North West Regional Development Agency.
The report highlights the effects of temperature rises, changes in weather conditions, and wider consequences of climate change such as an increase in demand for water, changing agricultural practices and migration to areas less affected by floods, such as Cumbria.
