County Cricket - Defeat for Cumberland after promise

CUMBERLAND let a strong position crumble as they suffered a 73-run defeat to Buckinghamshire in the opening three-day fixture of their Minor Counties Championship campaign at Sedbergh School this week.

The hosts seemed to have done their homework against Bucks, who include former England and Surrey batsman Keith Medlycott in their ranks, when dismissing them for only 152 in their first innings.

Matthew Watson (48) and Medleycott (36) led the scoring as a sixth-wicket stand of 71 kept Bucks afloat.

Sedbergh School's own Jordan Clark stole the bowlers' thunder with 4-21 off his 8.5 overs.

Everything seemed to be in Cumberland's favour as openers Carl Hey and Steve Knox put on 70 for the first wicket in reply, but three wickets fell for two runs including Carl Hey (35) and Steve Knox (33) and the innings fell away, though Clark, batting at No. 7, again performed well for 24.

With Cumberland only four runs ahead after being dismissed for 156, mainly due to the effort of George Harper (6-27) and James Tincknell, Bucks took command in their second innings to pile up 314.

Medleycott top-scored with 67 and solid work from Jones (56) and skipper Paul Atkins (64), leaving little for the bowlers to enthuse about with the exception of Carnforth's Adam Cowperthwaite, who took 5-64 off his 18.5 overs, and skipper Marcus Sharp (3-41).

Going into the final day, Cumberland needed 294 runs to win and Steve Knox proved the mainstay in the run-chase with an unbeaten 81.

Gary Pratt went for only four and when Clark also departed cheaply, Cumberland were 66-4.

James Smith played a series of booming drives and he and Knox added 88 for the fifth wicket to offer renewed hope, but Smith's dismissal for 53 with nine fours from 53 balls, was a major blow.

Workington wicketkeeper Callum Moffatt joined Knox to take the score on to 190 but the innings fell away as Cumberland were all out for 237, short by 73 runs and disappointing after a poor batting display in their first innings.

For the next game away to Suffolk at Ipswich on June 22-24 there will be changes due to unavailability, although Vic Craven is expected to return.
