Expedition plans Everest summit bid
A CUMBRIAN-led mountaineering expedition is preparing to make a bid to reach the summit of Everest tomorrow (Friday).
A team of seven mountaineers spearheaded by Ambleside-based Adventure Peaks are gathering their strength at the 7,900 metre Camp 4 on the south side of the mountain, and plan to make an attempt to reach the 8,850 metre peak.
The team, which includes well-known Kirkby Stephen runner Pete Brittleton, was forced to swirtch plans to attack the summit from the north side after China closed the border with Tibet due to recent political unrest.
A spokesman for Adventure Peaks said the team had acclimatised well and weather reports for summit day were "favourable."
Updates on the progress of the expedition are available on the Adventure Peaks website at www.adventurepeaks.com/news.
