A SUCCESSFUL scheme to boost numbers of an endangered moorland bird in the North Pennines is set to expand into the Yorkshire Dales.
In the 12 years since it was founded, the North Pennines Black Grouse Recovery Project has seen UK numbers of the spectacular but threatened bird rise from 773 males in 1998 to 1,029 in 2006.
Thanks to a cash boost from Natural England and Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, the scheme is now set to expand into the Yorkshire Dales and experts hope it will further help to secure the future of the black grouse.
